Corporation Attention: Thomas J. Usher, Chief Executive Officer Dear Mr. Usher, We are a coalition of boaters, fishers, divers and concerned citizens seeking to explore the use of retired Budd M-1 Long Island Railroad Cars as part of an Artificial Reef building system. Our basic goal is to create new reefs and to enhance exiting artificial reef structures using retired stainless steel Budd M-1 Railcars. Among the issues that have been raised in connection with this project is the probable durable life of these Cars in the saltwater environment. The preliminary information we have received is that their projected underwater life is measured in decades, without significant structural deterioration. It is important that we verify that information in order to gain important political and other support necessary for implementation of the project. As this project can help give "new life" to the Budd M-1 Stainless Steel Railroad Car, we request your help in verifying the projected underwater life of these Cars. It appears to us that your engineering staff would be a prime source for obtaining such information. In the alternative, we seek your aid in identifying an appropriate materials engineer or other specialist who could help verify the long-term projected life of M-1 Cars in the underwater environment. We appreciate your attention to this matter. As the project is somewhat time sensitive, your prompt response would be most helpful. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
