Reef Replenishment Project

Sportfishing Education Center

Southaven Park Project

NYFTTA has begun an artificial reef replenishment project. This project will raise money throughout the year for purchasing old barges and boats, etc...., not to just replenish existing, but also create new artificial reefs in the New York Marine District. Our first 110 foot barge was sunk on 9/9/99 at the Fire Island site. The Loran numbers are 26638.5  43738.5 Latitude and Longitude 40 degrees 35.990 North and 73 degrees 13.234 West. A similar project is continuing in the Moriches area and has been a great success. Within just a few months of placement, artificial reefs have greatly improved fishing in the area.     NYFTTA has worked towards establishing a Sportfishing Education Center. Thanks to Assemblyman Bob Sweeney and the Town of Babylon a $425,000.00 grant has been obtained to build the Sportfishing Education Center at he Town of Babylon Cedar Marina. Construction is planned for Spring 2000. The Center will teach children and adults about the sport of fishing. The facility will also teach the importance of conserving our resources for the future. Various educational programs and field trips will be hosted at the Center. A recirculating aquaculture program will also be constructed to research ways for us to give back to the resource. Existing plans also include the construction of an additional  pier to increase fishing opportunities in the area.

NYFTTA, with the support and help of Legislator Fred Towle, received a $1,500.00 grant for the Southaven Park Kids Fishery project. This initial grant was used to clean up the pond and hatchery and to build a set of dock platforms. Legislator Towle is also working to obtain a $15,000.00 fund for additional docks, maintenance costs and stocking the pond. When completed the project will include twenty platforms around the duck pond, rehabilitation of the trout hatchery and creation of a fish stocking  program. The new docks will also benefit the teach-a-kid fishing programs. NYFTTA also participates in many other Teach-a-Kid fishing programs donating time, money and equipment.
