Sportfishing Alliance Minutes of Meeting 06/19/01 (NYSFF Office building)

1.        Minutes of May Meeting – secretary not present at last meeting

2.        Treasury’s Report: report from 1/1/01 to 6/13/01 provided; Net total $4,224.08

3.        Logo:  A total of 7 logos were presented; motion was made by Tom Melton and seconded to accept logo of kid fishing on pier.  Discussion followed, including that if the logo was reduce it would be to small/not visible, that the logo doesn’t portray what the SEC wants to portray, a logo must be accepted at this meeting, logos can be changed, suggestion of having a contest for the kids when the center opens to provide a logo, non-board members cannot make a motion; Motion to accept the same logo was made by a board member and seconded.  Motion Approved.

4.        Fundraising:  treasurer’s report provided; fundraising is necessary; request to hire a professional fundraiser; fundraisers take a percentage of funds (typically 20-25%) and percentage comes from fundraiser itself.  John Mantione to look into professionals and provide quotes; Motion made for John to go forward to investigate and report back.  Motion Approved.

5.        Casting for recovery:  August 15th fundraising event at Riverview Restaurant;  $50 per person/cash bar.  Proceeds to go to short fall in July 27th event at Windwatch.  Invitations shown; will be sent to breast cancer groups, Jenny fields, etc.

6.        Fees for Center:  Girl Scouts are booked for October at $3 per head.  Need to make a price lists for groups, organizations, etc.  Meeting Room will go for $50 per organization with use of equipment if available; $3 per head for groups (up to $100 for whole group) Group size to be limited to legal limit of building.  Motion to accept fees Approved.

7.        Babylon meeting:  Frank Bacerdy new very little.  Requirements:   yielded to $10 daily parking fee from Jun 23 to Labor day; Town of Babylon board sanctioned, Babylon has to come up w/non-resident season permit (prob. between $35-40), Discussion within Town Board is ongoing at this time, clarified that entities involved for working at Center will be given a pass; no equipment/museum stuff can be held in building until it is secured.  Friday Sweeney meeting w/Babylon to some of these issues resolved.

8.        Budget:  As of June 1, 2001, committee has ceased budget; fund raising on horizon and have a few small grants, as well as sponsor package and sponsorship letter; Recommended authorizing expenditures/budget; Motion to allow a $500 budget per month for expenses, anything over Board must approve.  Motion approved.

9.        Pier Update:  FWS will not contest to permit changes, pier will extend to State Channel; still need ACOE and DOS approval; suggest put lights on pier for safety, DEC states it would not affect birds; two osprey nests will be placed as mitigation.  Discussion of whether lights on pier are even necessary, no vote taken.

10.     Construction update:  roof finished, access ramps are up; Scheduled completion date:  July 1, 2001

11.     NSF Grant:  Scott Bronson w/Cold Spring Harbor and Lenora are looking into NFS grant at Center; Scott is doing DNA research w/stripped bass; meeting next Tuesday/Wednesday w/academic professors to come up with wording for grant.

12.     National Fishing Week – canceled due to rain and rain date was held last Saturday at Southaven; more than 80 kids showed for the Teach a Kid to Fish programs, LIBBA provided hot dogs; noticed fishing piers are gone, John Fritz to look into it; received $15,000 grant for hatchery and was transferred to SC Parks, in 6 months will loose funding if not completed; Commissioner Scully stated that the response was high and wants to do more, wants to grant another $4,000 (if gets reelected) for kid fishing programs.

13.     BOCES:  Lenora program update:  NYFTTA donated rods and crab traps to BOCES, hopefully will get a press release. 

14.     Snapper Derby Fundraiser:  NYFTTA donated 50 combo rods to Bellport Community Center and Mastic/Shirley Library.  Teach a Kid to Fish programs will be the center of the derby; will have 6 loaner programs by the end of the year.  Antoinette knows Bob Myers, a Bronx school teacher, who would be interested in setting up programs; Bob Myers set up a fishing club but they have never been fishing.

15.     Girl Scouts:  programs were initiated at Camp Eddie; counselors will be taught program next week (26th) to start Teach a Kid to Fish programs in August; Lenora to be involved.

16.    Other:   July 1st construction will be completed; people should contact Lenora for museum/library donations, Letter has been drafted; there is a potential for Native American fishing artifacts to be placed in museum; Fishathon to be run by Advisory committee; funding for mounts is waiting for facility to be complete, purchasing and/or sponsorships to be run by SAC; casting for Recovery in kind services/participation, fundraiser to serve them under authority of SAC.     MEETING END
